Demand for custom-made soft toys keeps growing across Russia and Central Asia: companies order mascots, corporate gifts and retail lines. But between an idea and a finished batch there are six stages, dozens of decisions, and risks — overpaying, missed deadlines, certification problems. This guide breaks the order down with real numbers from our practice.
Factory custom orders vs ready-made wholesale
Ready-made models from wholesale markets are fast and cheap, but offer no uniqueness — your competitors can buy the same model. Custom production gives you your own design, quality control and import documents, but requires a batch of 500+ pieces and 25–50 days. A full comparison of the three sourcing channels is in our article Factory, Wholesale or Agent.
The six order stages
- Concept and sketch. You send an idea, references or a rough drawing; the factory produces a working sketch with front/side/back views.
- 3D visualization. A volumetric model shows proportions before fabric cutting — edits at this stage are fast and free.
- Sample. A physical prototype: materials, stuffing, embroidery, hardware. Approving the sample starts mass production.
- Mass production. Cutting, sewing, stuffing and assembly in scheduled batches.
- Quality control. Checking seams, symmetry, attachment of eyes and noses, conformity to the sample; independent inspection on request.
- Packing and shipment. Labeling, retail or bulk packaging, dispatch by your chosen transport.
Each stage in detail is covered in our production process article.

The cost structure and hidden expenses are unpacked in the cost guide; timing details in the production timeline guide.
What to prepare before sending an inquiry
- References: photos, sketches, similar characters (the more, the more accurate the quote).
- Desired toy size and target volume.
- Deadline: the date the batch must reach you.
- Destination market: it defines certification and labeling.
- Packaging: retail box, polybag, branded hangtags.
Certification for Russia and the EAEU
Toys require conformity assessment under TR CU 008/2011 “On safety of toys”. Key detail: the certificate is obtained by the importer through an accredited EAEU body; the factory provides samples and technical documentation. Build this step into your schedule before paying for mass production. More in our import guide.
Logistics through Khorgos
For Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan the main overland route is the Khorgos border crossing: road balances speed and cost, rail suits large batches, air is for urgent light cargo. We include logistics in the quote from day one so the final landed cost never becomes a surprise.
Quick factory verification
Before prepayment: a sample in hand, EN71/CE/ASTM test reports with verifiable numbers, real track record, a contract fixing lead times and staged payments. Full checklist in our production regions article.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to order custom soft toys from a Chinese factory?
As a guide, $4–10.5 per piece for orders from 500 units; the exact quote depends on size, materials and complexity. Samples cost ¥500–2,000 and are credited toward the first order.
How long does custom manufacturing take?
25–50 days of production plus shipping. The sample is usually ready within the first third of that period.
Who obtains the EAC certificate for toys?
The importer, through an accredited EAEU certification body; the factory supplies samples and the technical file.
Can I start with fewer than 500 pieces?
Custom production is economically justified from 500 pieces. Smaller volumes mean ready-made models with no brand uniqueness.
